The games have a maximum duration of 10 minutes and the objective is to destroy as many robots as possible on the opposing side. If a player is eliminated, he respawns. The first team to reach 50 eliminations wins, or the one with the most after the time limit has been reached.
The battlefield is quite large and, in some battles, you’ll spend a fair amount of time trying to find the “front-line” and take part in the action. Once a shootout starts, there’s a need for manoeuvrability and also firing accuracy. There’s a touch of the twin-stick shooter as your mech can move one way and shoot another, which makes sense given the context. The bigger, slower mechs also deliver some brutal firepower which will kill most mechs fairly quickly, so you’ll need to try to use cover, some of which is destroyable. Smaller mechs will need to use hit and run tactics rather than just standing and fighting but you can expect to see mechs blown up in a fairly short order – they certainly aren’t as hard to kill as a Battletech walking tank.
The premise, based on a world that’s slipped into disarray and a law system ruled by force, you’ll become a pilot of one of two factions – the Russian ‘Dominion’ and the American ‘KATO’. This leads you to part in the battle for control over a number of locations and, depending on which faction you belong to, you’ll either be able to trigger devastating air strikes or protect yourself from danger for a limited time. There are also different classes available, including the nimble but vulnerable Scout; the mighty Stormtroopers that strike hard; the Destroyers, who are slow yet deliver heavy damage from range; and the indispensable Support class, possessing the ability to restore armour and supplies.
Platinum is the second form of currency, and this is the one that you can pay real life money to acquire extra amounts of. Don’t worry, you can acquire platinum by completing tasks from the various task lists that can be accessed from your hangar. Platinum is used to purchase random-loot-containers of various value and price, many of which consist of mechs, paint styles for specific mechs, credits, or weapons. I’m not usually one for random-loot-anything, but I did acquire a fair amount of platinum by inadvertently completing tasks while simply playing and there really isn’t anything else to spend the platinum on. Don’t get too excited, though, if you happen to snag an elite Titan-class mech. I did but had no equipment to equip to it, and blueprints for it are very expensive.
